This gambling complex, worth around $5.5 billion was built by Las Vegas Sands, a casino giant, and is already a major attraction for tourists and locals alike. The ArtScience museum was opened exactly on the 17th of February at 13:18, "as advised by our feng shui master," a Marina Bay Sands spokeswoman said.
The Charmain of Las Vegas Sands, Sheldon Adelson, named the ArtScience museum ‘The Welcoming Hand of Singapore’ as the architecture of the museum features 10 ‘fingers’ anchored by a round base in the middle. The building of the ArtScience museum was designed by the famous architect Moshe Safdie who was inspired by the shape of a lotus flower. Each finger, or petal, holds different gallery spaces featuring skylights at top that illuminate the beautifully curved interior walls. The dish-like roof of the museum allows rainwater to be collected and recycled, as it is channelled down through the building reaching a reflecting pond at the lowest level of the building.
The building features 21 gallery spaces covering an area of 6,000 square meters. There is a permanent exhibition that includes objects representing the accomplishments of art and science throughout the ages, such as Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Machine, a Kongming Lantern and a high-tech robotic fish. Temporary exhibits in the galleries will display various subjects related to art, science, media, technology, design and architecture.
The exhibitions attract people from all over the globe and inspires people from all walks of life as the collections seek to explain the links between art and science and their relation with the universe.
