The first robbery happened on the 17th of November, where two masked man armed with knives robbed the Happy Jacks Casino on Mount Rushmore Road. Both of the robbers were described as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds, wearing dark jackets and hooded sweatshirts.
One day later, on Thursday, the 18th of November in the early hours of the morning, a man dressed as a ninja and armed with a sword hit the Happy Jacks casino on Cambell Street. The robber, who was described as a 5 foot, 5 inches tall man, was handed the money by a clerk after which he fled the scene. The amount of money remained undisclosed.
The third and final robbery took place on Saturday the 21st of November, at the Happy Jacks Casino on Timmons Boulevard when a masked but unarmed man entered the casino, assaulted the clerk and asked for money. The thief was described as a male between 20 and 30 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds, wearing dark clothing and a ski mask.
M.G. Oil, the Parent Company of Happy Jacks were offering a reward of $10,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The Rapid City
police made an arrest a few weeks later; 50-year old Daniel Gillen was arrested with first-degree robbery while additional suspects were questioned with the chain of robberies. Needless to say, Happy Jacks now have additional security staff at their casino.
