Roulette is the one of the most popular casino table games in the world. Even if the table layout looks slightly complex, roulette is quite an easy game to understand and play.
The standard layout found in most casinos in America has a three by twelve matrix numbered from 1 to 36. Each box is coloured in either black or red. Then there’s the roulette wheel, which has 38 slots for the ball to fall in, each slot is numbered from 1 to 36 and there are also the 0 and 00.
Your job is to guess in which slot will the ball fall after the roulette wheel is spinned. You can bet on different combinations:
- Any single number (straight up): Bet on any individual number plus 0 and 00, with the odds of winning being 35 to 1, by putting the number of chips you want on your favourite number.
- A column (a twelve number bet): Bet on any number in that vertical column, with the odds of winning being 2 to 1, by putting the chips on the appropriate boxes at the end of each column appropriately called 2 to 1
- A dozen (a twelve number bet): Bet on any of the 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12 section of the Roulette layout, with the odds of winning being 2 to 1, by placing your chips on the the boxes to the left of the columns.
- Even-money (an 18 number bet): On the lower right and left corners of the layout there are two boxes called “1 to 18” and another one called “19 to 36”. Placing your chips on either of these two gives you a 1 to 1 chance of winning. In some casinos, mainly in Nevada, Even bets are lost if the ball lands on 0 and 00, however, in other casinos, players either lose half of their chips or else the bet is frozen for another spin.
- Split (a two number bet): By placing your chips on the line between any two numbers will pay off when you guess any of these two numbers, in this case your chances of winning are 17 to 1.
- Corner (a four number bet): You can bet on four numbers by placing your chips in the corner in a way that they are touching four different boxes. The odds of winning this type of bet are 8 to 1.
- Trio (a three number bet): By placing the chips on the line that separates the numbers from the dozens, you can bet on a whole row. This bet, which has odds of 11 to 1, pays off when any number of the three is hit.
- Five (the only five-number bet possible in roulette). By placing your chips in the corner between the 0, 1 and 1st 12, you would be betting on the first two rows i.e. on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This bet, which has odds of winning equivalent to 6 to 1, pays off when any of the five numbers are hit
- Six (six number bet): By placing your chips midway on the line that separates the numbers from the dozens, you can bet on two whole rows. This bet, which has odds of 5 to 1, pays off when any of the six numbers are guessed.
There could be up to six players playing roulette; each one is given different-colored chips to easily track the numbers that players are betting on. The value of your bet is up to you, chips start from smaller values like 25c, 50c, $1 and $2, but you can also bet larger amounts using $5, $25 and $100 casino chips.
Every game starts with the dealer spinning the roulette wheel in one direction, which is followed by rolling a tiny ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. As the wheel slows down, the ball will eventually fall into one of the numbered slots. That number is the declared winner for that game.
