Poker is one of the most popular casino games in the world. There are many different variations to this card game, all of which involve betting and individual play, and where the winner is the one who has the highest ranks and combinations of cards, some of which remain hidden until the end of the game.

The variations of poker have different number of cards dealt, a varying of shared cards or cards that remain hidden. Betting procedures also vary amongst games such as with betting limits and splitting the pot between a high hand and a low hand. The most popular form of poker is definitely the Texas Hold'em type and this to master poker, it is best to start practicing with this version first.

In any case, the objective of poker is the same whatever the variation is, which translates to having the best five cards among your opponents. The game involves a communal ‘pot’ which holds the pool of money bet by players along the game. A round of poker is a battle for the pot, which in the end is awarded to the winner - the player who either holds the highest ranking hand when all the cards are shown, or else makes a wager which the opponents are not willing to match. The poker room usually charges a rake - or a percentage from the pot as commission for every hand played. This is often the only source of income for poker rooms.

Poker is played with a normal deck of 52 cards, arranged in four suits. The first very important step is to learn the hand rankings. Aces are considered to be the high cards and deuces the lowest, however the different suits have no particular ranking.

The hands have different values and definitions, and can be split into these categories of five-card poker hands, from weakest to highest: One Pair, Two pair, Three of a kind, Straight, Flush, Full house, Four of a kind, Straight flush and Royal flush. Therefore, every one of these hands beats all those listed before it.

To have ‘One pair’ in poker, means to have two cards out of the five having the same numerical rank, for example a pair of aces. If two players show down one pair hands of the same rank, they should compare their next highest card, which is known as the kicker, in order to determine the winner. In case the kickers are equal, the next highest card should be compared.

In similar way, a ‘Two pair’ hand consists of two different pairs of cards and another card in a five-card hand, such as for examples (a pair of aces, a pair of kings and a 5 which is the kicker). If two hands have equal top pairs, the lower pairs are then compared, and the highest one wins. If both pairs are the same, the kickers are compared, the highest one winning.

The ‘Three of a kind’ hand consists of three cards of the same numerical rank in a five-card poker hand, for example three of a kind aces. Again, if there is more than one person having a three of a kind, the players compare their kickers, with the highest one winning.

The ‘Straight’ hand consists of five cards in sequential order, of different suits, while the ‘Flush’ has five cards in non-sequential order, all of the same suit. If two players have flushes, they should compare their top cards to determine a winner.

The ‘Full House’ hand has three cards of the same numerical value, together with a pair. It basically has both three of a kind and a pair in the same hand. If any two players show down full houses with three of a kinds that have an equal rank, then the hand with the highest ranked pair would win the pot.

Four of a kind’ has four cards of the same numerical rank, and a fifth other card. Meanwhile, having a Straight Flush means having five cards of the same suit in sequential order, all of the same suit.

Finally, obtaining a Royal Flush means to obtain an A-K-Q-J-10, all of the same suit. This is the highest possible straight flush, but because of its very high value, it is dubbed with a separate name. The suit of a royal flush does not matter; all of them are equally valuable.

Any other five-card poker hand that does not fit in any of the combinations listed above, is simply known as a high-card hand. The same concept applies here, when comparing two hands, the one with the highest card wins. Kickers are compared if the highest cards are equal.

After the last round of betting in a round of poker, the players must turn over their cards and compare their five-card poker hands. This is called a showdown.

All games start with a forced wager, called an ante, over which poker players compete. In any basic poker game, players strategically wager using the following actions:

  • Check - If there is no wager on the current betting round, a player may check, meaning that the action is passed to the next person, sitting immediately clockwise. A check does not cancel one’s interest in the pot, only the current right to bet. If all active players check during a round of betting, the round is considered complete.
  • Bet - In the case that there is still no wager on the current betting, a player may bet, while the person sitting immediately clockwise may fold, raise, or call.
  • Fold - Folding forfeits all interest in the pot. Whoever folds is not required or allowed to wager more money during the current poker hand, but it’s not possible for them to win that hand.
  • Call - If there is a bet on the current round of play already, a player may call and is required to match the current bet made by the opponent(s).
  • Raise - If there is a bet on the current betting round, a player may raise, meaning that the player has to match the current bet, and then make a greater one. All subsequent players are required to call the raise or re-raise to maintain interest in the pot.

In each betting round, betting continues until every player has either matched the bets made or folded. When the betting round is complete, the next dealing/betting round begins, or the hand is complete. If the last bet or raise on the final betting round is called, it’s time for showdown. Here the winner of the pot is determined, as players show their hands one-by-one.

There are cases where no showdown happens. This occurs when a player bets or raises, and all other players choose to fold. In such cases, the player who does the bet or raises wins the full amount of the pot. At the end of the hand, the remaining players have a few options regarding the show of their hand:

  • Muck winning hand: If there’s only one player left in the hand, they can choose whether they want to show their cards or not.
  • Muck losing hand: On the other hand, in case of multiple players in the hand at the showdown, those players whose hands cannot beat the best hand shown till then can choose whether to show their cards or not.
  •

All players dealt into a hand have the right to see mucked hands that reach the showdown, on request. Mucked cards will only be shown to players dealt into the hand.

We suggest that you start practicing poker with your family and friends, or online for fun, before you actually try playing for money at the casino. Make sure that you learn all the basics and practice a few strategies to improve your skills so that you can beat your opponents at the table. Good luck!
