How To Play Craps: A Clear Beginner Tutorial
Craps looks chaotic because the table has many betting zones. The actual game flow is simple: a come-out roll, a possible point, then point before seven. Learn that first and the table starts to make sense.

Craps In Plain English
You do not need to understand every bet to play. Start with the roll sequence and the main line bets.
The shooter
One player rolls two dice. Online craps may use a digital roll or live studio roll, but the result still follows the same table rules.
The come-out roll
A round starts before any point exists. This first roll decides whether pass line bets win, lose or move into the point phase.
The point
If the come-out roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, that number becomes the point. The shooter now tries to roll the point again before rolling 7.
Seven-out
Once a point exists, rolling 7 before the point ends the round for pass line bettors. That is why beginners hear so much about avoiding the seven.
Inside numbers
5, 6, 8 and 9 are often called inside numbers. Many beginners focus on 6 and 8 because they are rolled more often than 4, 5, 9 or 10.
Center-table bets
Hardways and one-roll proposition bets can be exciting, but they usually carry higher house edges and should be treated as entertainment bets.
Step-By-Step: Your First Craps Round
This sequence teaches the table without burying you in side bets.
Start with the pass line
Place a pass line bet before the come-out roll. It is the simplest way to follow the shooter.
Resolve the come-out roll
7 or 11 wins. 2, 3 or 12 loses. Any 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 becomes the point.
Wait for the point phase
Once a point is set, the pass line wins if the point repeats before a 7. It loses if 7 appears first.
Add odds only if comfortable
Odds are optional after a point is established. They pay true odds, but they still increase the money at risk.
Keep bets simple
A beginner can learn with pass line, optional odds and maybe place 6 or 8. Avoid filling the layout with bets too early.
Stop before chasing
A losing roll is not a problem to repair. It is part of the game. Set a stop-loss before the first bet.
Practice the flow
Use free-play or low-stakes tables to learn timing, terminology and payout movement before risking meaningful money.
Read table rules
Online craps variations can change field payouts, odds limits, minimum bets and special rules. Check the rules panel first.
Main Craps Bets Explained
Use this as a beginner cheat sheet. House edge can vary by table rules, payout rules and odds limits.
A Sensible Beginner Approach
Craps is still gambling. The goal is to understand the game, not chase a guaranteed system.
Start here
A simple learning setup is pass line first, optional odds after a point, and maybe place 6 or 8 once you understand the rhythm.
- Set a session budget before playing.
- Use small stakes while learning.
- Understand every bet before placing it.
- Stop after hitting your time or loss limit.
Avoid this early
Do not start by covering the table with hardways, horn bets, field bets and repeated prop bets. They create action, but they can drain a beginner quickly.
- Do not chase the last losing roll.
- Do not raise stakes because the table feels hot.
- Do not treat odds as risk-free money.
- Do not play if you do not know the payout.
Online Craps Tips
Online versions are faster than physical tables, so the same bankroll can disappear faster if you click without a plan.
Before playing online: check the rules panel, minimum bet, maximum odds, payout table, autoplay controls, session timer and safer gambling tools. If the game moves too fast, slow down or stop. Craps should be entertainment, never a way to recover losses or fix financial pressure.
